When the natural gas-powered generator on the 12th floor starts, it will not only produce some 6.2 megawatts of electricity — enough to power up to half the 57-floor building on a busy day — but it will also siphon off wasted heat and use it to help heat and cool the 37-year-old skyscraper. ORIGINALLY, I had envisioned one of those classic European hiking holidays, the kind where you just sort of ramble from village to village. Say, Italy’s Cinque Terre. My budget wasn’t having any of it, and nothing got off the ground. Sitting around my apartment was not an option either, but when a friend suggested a weekend rambling through the many and varied villages of Fire Island, I didn’t exactly jump at the opportunity.
