ORIGINALLY, I had envisioned one of those classic European hiking holidays, the kind where you just sort of ramble from village to village. Say, Italy’s Cinque Terre. My budget wasn’t having any of it, and nothing got off the ground. Sitting around my apartment was not an option either, but when a friend suggested a weekend rambling through the many and varied villages of Fire Island, I didn’t exactly jump at the opportunity.
